DIY Instant Oatmeal

I’m trying really hard to eat healthier in the morning. Many times my breakfast consists of coffee and a bagel because it’s easy and quite frankly, carbs do the job.

Hot oatmeal is always delicious, but I know when I head back to work I won’t have time in the morning to cook my oatmeal on the stove. I don’t use a microwave other than to sanitize my sponges, still don’t know why I have one.

I also like the fancy stuff, you know organic rolled oats,Β  pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, and all the other good healthy ingredients that help fuel our body. Browsing in the grocery aisles, I managed to find a few companies that make already made packets and all you need to do is add hot water. However, when buying these packages, I noticed the costs were adding up. I would buy boxes with maybe 6 packets, spend $7 and I would find myself eating more than one packet at a time. So it would last me 3-4 mornings?

I decided to make my own. I buy organic rolled oats in bulk anyway, I might as well make use of it in ways other than baking. I also buy hemp and chia seeds in bulk because I use it quite regularly in my diet. Then you can add whatever you like, pumpkin seeds, dried fruit, spices you like, the possibilities are endless!!

With this recipe I managed to make almost two regular size mason jars full of oatmeal and it will last me quite some time. Definitely worth that little extra effort to save an extra nickel (pennies are obsolete now).

The key with making instant oatmeal is a third of your oats need to be pulsed to a finer state, mix it with whole oats and it will speed up the process in your morning routine. I decided to make a batch of my roasted oats to add a little extra flavour and crunch in the mix.

Cooking the oats

  1. In a bowl place as much of the mixture as you like.
  2. Add boiled water until the oats have been submersed, you can add a little extra if you like it softer.
  3. Add whatever toppings you like, sliced apples, bananas, blueberries, cinnamon, brown sugar. Have fun with it!

Enjoy!
